The inter-generational sugar battle
So far as this is concerned, many parents choose to concede ground occupied by grandparents:
‘My son knows that chocolate biscuits exist at Grandma’s house, but are not available at home.’ MadamePlatypus
This approach will be harder though if you have a grandparent providing regular childcare, and you may have to have a proper discussion about what foods you are not happy with (or sack Granny when you find her filling baby’s bottle with Value Cola). Some parents are firmly of the view that they alone should have control over what their children ingest, at least during infancy:
‘My partner has her at his parents’ house today – I’m supposed to be sleeping, as I’m on night shift. When I rang him to see how she was, she was eating a biscuit. I could hear mother-in-law in the background saying, but it’s a Cow and Gate organic biscuit; yes, but it’s still full of sugar and, more importantly, SHE DOESN’T NEED A BISCUIT! My aunt wanted her to try caramel shortbread on Friday and my dad has already asked when she can have ice cream. I don’t want her to eat stuff like that until she is old enough to ask for it, and then I will take an “everything-in-moderation” approach, but not when she is only nine months!’ LaDiDaDi
But why does Granny push sugar and other crap, anyway? And can you do anything about it? There are various theories as to why the older generation hang about on street corners wearing trench coats, which they open to reveal sherbet fountains and Wagon Wheels, dangling like knock-off Rolexes.
Some are simple:
‘Food = love to the older generations, I think.’ luckylady74
‘I think it’s because they’re stupid, tbh. I’ve tried to think of other options but, in the end, I always plump for that simplistic explanation. Or they think the child will love them more if they give her as much sugar as she can tolerate without vomiting.’ Caligula
